Writing a Good Conclusion Paragraph
The conclusion paragraph is pretty self-explanatory. Its purpose is to summarize the main points of the essay and reiterate the thesis statement.
Here are some tips to help you:
- Don't start your conclusion paragraph with transitions like "In conclusion..." or "To summarize...".
- It should already be clear to readers that this is the last paragraph of your essay.
- These phrases have been overused and indicate weak writing ability.
- Is there something more creative you can end with?
- Restate the points you made, but don't copy them word for word.
- This tip is especially important in regards to your thesis. Figure out another way to say it that isn't close to the original.
- Describe the main ideas of the arguments you made (sometimes wrapped up in the thesis).
- Don't introduce any new concepts in your conclusion paragraph.
- Doing this often leaves the reader hanging since there is not much room to explain the new topic
- Introduce new concepts in the introductory paragraph and describe them more thoroughly in the body paragraphs.
- End your paragraph with something creative.
- As I said in the previous tip, don't introduce a new concept...but give the reader something to think about.
- Give your essay a powerful last word that leaves a good impression on the reader.
